UW ‘Golden’ in Marquette victory

first_imgThe University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team threw a party Saturday, Bo Ryan-style. The party didn’t involve balloons or cake, but instead ball control and sharp-shooting. The team convincingly defeated in-state rival Marquette 77-63, delivering Ryan his 100th win as UW head coach, and doing so playing a textbook Bo Ryan game.”I didn’t see any confetti in the locker room, no things you blow on and they roll out when you blow on them,” Ryan joked after the win.The Badgers ran Bo Ryan’s patented swing offense to perfection, consistently finding open shots against the aggressive Golden Eagle man-to-man defense, shooting 44.3 percent from the field.”I was really disappointed in our ability to defend, giving them open jumpers throughout the game,” Marquette head coach Tom Crean said. “We know that that is a huge part of their game, with plenty of guys who can shoot the ball.”Wisconsin also limited themselves to nine turnovers (six of which came within six minutes of each other), while forcing Marquette to commit 16. The Badgers ended up scoring 20 points off of those 16 turnovers.”I thought the turnovers today were strange. We had two in the first half, then six in the first few minutes of the second and then one at the end. I’d say that’s pretty good care being taken by your players,” Ryan said, crediting his point guard, Kammron Taylor, for the clean ball-handling. “They valued the basketball and [Taylor] was one of those guys that was making sure it happened.”Wisconsin enjoyed a career day by senior Ray Nixon, who had a personal-best 15 points, and strong performances from Taylor — who scored a game-high 18 points — and Jason Chappell, who came within one rebound of his first double-double, tallying 10 points and nine boards.”[Chappell] always brings energy. That’s nothing different. He played solid and that is a good sign,” Ryan said.Nixon in particular was impressive, as the senior had failed to register a point, assist or steal in any of his previous games against Marquette. On this day, however, the Milwaukee native filled the stat box in all three of those categories, adding two assists and three steals to his 15 points.”Ray Nixon did what seniors do,” Crean said.”Marquette is a very aggressive team. They overplay wings and things like that, so I just took what they gave me,” said Nixon. “They were up close so I just tried to get the lane as much as I could.”For the most part, Marquette and Wisconsin were equally matched, and for 30 of the game’s 40 minutes, the Badgers and Golden Eagles played even on the scoreboard, but the final 10 minutes of the first half proved to be the deciding period of the game. With 10 minutes left on the clock, the score was knotted at 19 when Marquette made their big push of the game and took a 23-19 lead, their largest of the day.For the second consecutive game, though, Wisconsin responded to falling behind by making a big run. Against UW-GB on Wednesday, Wisconsin had a 22-5 run after trailing 47-46, and against Marquette the Badgers turned the trick again, going on a 25-8 run that proved to be the difference in the game.”I thought that at the eight-minute mark in the first half we had the lead, and then I never liked our demeanor the rest of the half,” Crean said. “We had a four-point lead and kept it for a little bit, then we lost our aggressiveness. We didn’t have any ball pressure, we gave them lay-ups and we settled for jump shots.”As for Ryan, the coach wasn’t too nostalgic over winning his 100th game, but indicated he appreciated that to win 100 games he had the opportunity to spend five more years doing his dream job, coaching up student-athletes.”I don’t care about numbers that way,” Ryan said of his 100th victory. “The thing that I do think about, if you are going to talk numbers, if you think over X number of years of coaching about all the guys you get a chance to meet and be a part of their lives. Those are the numbers I like.”last_img
