Ruling party wins general election in Antigua and Barbuda

first_imgPrime Minister Gaston Browne led his ruling Antigua and Barbuda Labor Party (ABLP) to victory in Wednesday’s general election after the party had won nine of the 10 seats declared early Thursday, according to the preliminary figures released by the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC).Browne, who called the poll more than a year ahead of the constitutional deadline, easily won his St. John’s City West seat, as the ABLP was on track to complete a rout of the main opposition United Progressive Party (UPP).He said he was pleased that the voters in his constituency had “invested in him” adding “I can assure them of bigger and better things to come.”Browne spoke of several multi-million dollar projects earmarked for the area, which he said would become the “envy of other constituencies over the next five years.”Meanwhile, the UPP, which was seeking to regain the government it lost in 2014, suffered heavily with both its leader, Harold Lovell and the deputy, Wilmoth Daniel, a veteran politician failing to win their seats.Lovell was seeking to regain the St. John’s City East seat, which he lost in 2014 to the incumbent Melford Nicholas of the ABLP.Nicholas polled 769 votes as against 616 for Lovell and 16 votes for Bruce Goodwin of the Democratic National Alliance (DNA).“This is a historic time for the people of Barbuda,” Walker said, noting that this is the first time that a candidate has won the seat by more than 100 seats. In Barbuda, the ABLP lost the sole seat when Trevor Walker of the Barbuda People’s Movement (BPM) easily defeated the incumbent Arthur Nibbs of the ABLP by 568 to 429 votes. In the 2014 general election, the ABLP had won 14 of the 17 seats at stake. The remaining three seats had gone to the UPP.Browne is scheduled to be sworn in on Thursday.last_img read more

UEFA Champions League Match Day 4 Preview (2017/11/01)

first_imgRelatedSpanish La Liga Review: Villareal Stun Madrid As Atletico And Valencia Keep Pressure On Leaders BarcelonaJanuary 14, 2018In “Europe”Big Boost! Tottenham Star Is Back In Training And Ready To Face MadridOctober 31, 2017In “England”Prodigal Son Is Back! Auba Returns To UCL SquadNovember 21, 2017In “England” RB Leipzig Vs. FC. PortoRB Leipzig will be in action this week as they take on FC Porto in their home ground in Germany. This is will be an important game for both sides since it is an opportunity for the teams to get some much-needed points and boost their chances of getting a spot in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League.RB Leipzig is coming off a huge win in their domestic league as they won against Borussia Dortmund away from home. That is a big performance and the side will be feeling very confident after that. FC Porto will present another test for this young side, but they have been able to do well so far. Timo Werner, Emil Forsberg, and Naby Keita have been the three stand out players for the club and at the moment, they will need to lead the side once again. Tottenham vs. Real Madrid:Tottenham Hotspur welcome Real Madrid to Wembley Stadium on Wednesday night, with the two teams locked on the same points and goal difference at the top of UEFA Champions League Group H after three games.Spurs go into the game on the back of two defeats to West Ham United in the Carabao Cup and Manchester United in the Premier League, but having earned an impressive 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu last time out in this competition. Madrid, meanwhile, will need to bounce back from an embarrassing 2-1 La Liga defeat at Girona on Sunday that leaves them eight points behind leaders and rivals Barcelona.Real Madrid also has injury concerns, and Raphael Varane could miss out after being forced off at half-time in their 2-1 defeat at Girona with a hamstring problem.A win for either side will be enough to confirm their place in the knockout stages of the tournament, although Spurs will be aware they have never beaten Madrid in a competitive fixture.Tottenham would be glad to have their striker ‘Harry Kane’ back to the teamHowever, it’s not just his goalscoring that has been missed, Kane is able to hold up play and brings others into the attack, and Spurs struggled to offer much threat without him against Manchester United on Saturday. The match at Wembley looks to be another tense affair, particularly with the two clubs coming off the back of defeats at the weekend. Napoli Vs. Manchester CityManchester City can qualify for the Champions League knockout stages if they win at Napoli on Today.Pep Guardiola’s side has won all three of their Group F games thus far, with the only goal breaching Ederson’s goal coming from Amadou Diawara’s spot-kick when the Partenopei visited two weeks ago.Napoli was blown away by Manchester City in the opening stages at the Etihad Stadium but was unlucky not to claim a point come full time as Dries Mertens missed a penaltyThe Italians are flying high in Serie A with Sunday’s win over Sassulo keeping them top of the pile, but need a win to keep their own hopes of a place in the next stage alive. Besiktas Vs. AS MonacoBesiktas have set the pace in Group G, winning three out of three. A blend of experience, creative guile and solidity at the back have set the Turkish side apart. There is ample quality on the flanks thanks to veterans Ryan Babel and Ricardo Quaresma. The further pace is added by forward Cenk Tosun, who scored twice in Monaco last time out.Besiktas’ versatile forwards are ably supplied by former Arsenal schemer Oguzhan Ozyakup. He runs the midfield in front of a defence held together by centre-back Pepe, who won this tournament three times with Real.It will be Pepe’s job to subdue Radamel Falcao, who is Monaco’s attacking talisman this season. The Colombian striker scored in the first meeting between these two, continuing his prolific run in UEFA tournaments. Borussia Dortmund vs. APOELBorussia Dortmund will be confident of getting their UEFA Champions League campaign back on track as they welcome Cypriot champions APOEL Nicosia to the Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday.Despite losing to holders Real Madrid in their first European home outing of the season, Peter Bosz’s side remain a force to be reckoned with at the Signal Iduna Park, and they should have sufficient firepower to see off an APOEL side who are winless in three games in all competitions. Sevilla Vs. Spartak MoscowThankfully for Spartak, the Myaso have been excellent in cup competitions defeating Sevilla 5-1 at home two weeks ago in the UEFA Champions League and then Spartak Nalchik 5-2 in the round of 16 of the Russian Cup. With ten Russian Football Premier League sides already eliminated from the Russian Cup and with a decisive advantage in the aggregate score against Sevilla Spartak head coach, Massimo Carrera may focus on cup competitions this season in order to secure some glory for his side.A win for either side would guarantee Its high chance of Qualification to the round of 16. Liverpool FC. Vs. MariborKlopp will have to continue to deliver results so as not to threaten his project in Liverpool.Next up will be the Slovenian side Maribor in the UEFA Champions League. The two met on matchday 3 in Maribor and Liverpool’s impressive 7-0 win was the club’s most significant ever-European victory. Now on matchday 4, Liverpool want to confirm their positive results against Huddersfield and make a step towards securing one of the top places in the UEFA Champions League.Spartak and Sevilla will be taking points from each other on this matchday once again, which will be a big impetus for LFC to get the job done. Given the result on matchday 3, Liverpool’s firepower will be sufficient to take apart Maribor once again, even with a somewhat rotated side, which should pave the way towards Liverpool making a big step to the next round of the UEFA Champions League. Shakhtar Donetsk Vs. FeyenoordShakhtar has proved to be a force, only lost a game to Manchester City and interestingly are second in the log.A home win against Napoli proves how prepared they are for the competition. A win tonight will give them a very large hope of attaining the knock out stage.Feyenoord in the other hand have failed to record a single victory and could be a threat to the chance of the Ukrainian giant. Victory for Shakhtar and a point for Man city in Italy when they visit Napoli tonight could mean much to Shakhtar knock out stage hope.last_img read more

This week in Esports: Mouz and Doctor Pepper, Overwatch and League of Legends news

first_imgAnother week in esports, another non-endemic sponsorship. Dr Pepper has joined forces with German esports team mousesports to bring about a refreshing new partnership. Outside of sponsorship, IEM has announced that League of Legends will no longer feature at its events, and the announcement coincided with Riot’s announcement of their new series of international tournaments. Whilst rumours remain aplenty about the Overwatch League, Blizzard has now announced the Overwatch Contenders which is set to get underway imminently. EsportsDr Pepper and mousesports join forcesIt wouldn’t be a normal week in esports without a non-endemic sponsorship. Mous took to their website to reveal the deal, welcoming Dr Pepper Germany as a “new refreshing partner”. The partnership will begin with almost immediate effect, with mousesports jerseys to bear the logo from ESL Pro League Finals, in Dallas, Texas at the start of June.  The deal promises exclusive, behind the scenes contact for their fans. Content is considered king in esports so good content could be the key to making the partnership as successful as possible. Mous house one of the most popular Dota 2 rosters, who are known for their effervescence and thus the content opportunities there are seemingly endless.Read the full article here.IEM drop League of Legends from their tournaments and Riot announce Rift RivalsThere was big news from the organisers of the Intel Extreme Masters this week as they revealed that League of Legends will, at least for this season, no longer feature at their events. At IEM Katowice, League was one of three titles – complimenting CS:GO and Heroes of the Storm. A lack of guarantee over the top teams and top talent’s availability has led to IEM now no longer hosting League of Legends. It’s one of very few events outside of Riot’s Mid Season Invitational and World Championships that has previously hosted the biggest League of Legends teams on a global stage. It has a storied history and the Reddit thread was filled with fond memories of tournaments gone-by. It was later announced by Riot as the developer revealed details of its new international series. The series of tournaments is aptly named Rift Rivals, and will feature a plethora of tournaments being held in multiple locations across the world during July 3rd – 9th. Five tournaments will pit teams from 13 regions with close rivals. Riot has outlined that each tournament will vary in numbers of invited teams, venues and format but each event will pair one region against each other. There will be no games between teams from the same region – thus deviating from the traditional league and split system that characterises the League of Legends esports ecosystem. Read the full article here. (IEM)Read the full article here. (Riot)Overwatch Contenders announced with comprehensive rule-set in placeWhilst rumours continue to circulate about ridiculous prices for buy-in to the Overwatch League and potential lack of interest and/or proof of concept, Blizzard has announced the Overwatch Contenders series – which aims to create a grass roots scene for the fledgling esports title. eams from North America and Europe are invited to register and participate in the open signup, online-only qualifier to determine the top eight teams in each region. The two open tournaments will have a prize pool of $50,000 (£38,500). In North America, “Season Zero’s” top six teams will be joined by APEX participants Envy and Rogue for six weeks of round-robin play in Overwatch Contenders Season One. The top four teams will advance to an offline playoff bracket, where they will battle it out for their share of $100,000 (£77,000). Equally, eight European teams will play in a six-week regular season. The four of the best in Europe will then compete for their share of $100,000 in their own offline playoff bracket. For us, what was particularly interesting was the pre-defined and by esports standards remarkably clear rule-set, outlining the company’s stance on relatively controversial aspects such as gambling, match fixing and cheating. Read the full article here.last_img read more
