The 6-foot-9 forward has the handles to capably run the offense, and the ball will also likely spend a lot of time in LeBron James’ hands. In short, the Lakers aren’t concerned. Walton said he learned Thursday morning that Ball wouldn’t be able to play, and he and the Lakers continue to be patient for him to return to game action for the first time since March. Alexander: Should Lakers go all in for Anthony Davis? Absolutely, but …

first_img Lakers practice early hoping to answer all questions Lakers, Clippers schedules set for first round of NBA playoffs Is the Davis-to-the-Lakers speculation reality-based or wishful thinking? There will likely be a lot of twists and turns before we find out.Yes, James mused earlier in the season that Davis was quite the talent, and it sure would be “amazing” to play alongside him. (Then again, as he said later, he feels that way about a lot of guys.) And yes, Davis hired LeBron’s agent, Rich Paul, and yes, Paul verified this week that Davis, with a full season after this remaining before free agency, had requested a trade.Sign up for Home Turf and get exclusive stories every SoCal sports fan must read, sent daily. Subscribe here. But Pelicans general manager Dell Demps is in no hurry to do anything, even if Magic Johnson is. And I’m guessing that while Demps will do his due diligence with every trade proposal the Lakers toss his way – there were reportedly five at last count – there might be a lot of peer pressure to hang on to Davis for now and ignore the Lakers’ urgency to get a deal done. We’ve seen this before. The Indiana Pacers, upon being told two seasons ago that Paul George wanted a trade and ultimately planned to join the Lakers, instead sent him to Oklahoma City. San Antonio held on to Kawhi Leonard a year ago, through his calf injury and his dissatisfaction and the criticism of the people in his camp, and then traded him to Toronto. (Which, you might notice, is a long way from L.A.)It has been an article of faith among Lakers followers, honed through the decades, that the transcendent big man of any particular era will invariably wind up in their uniform: George Mikan in Minneapolis, followed by Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal and Dwight Howard.(OK, that last one was probably not a good example.)Davis absolutely fits into that category in today’s NBA, a 25-year-old, 6-foot-10 All-Star power forward with career averages of 24 points, 10.6 rebounds and 2.4 blocked shots (and 29.3, 13.3 and 2.6 this season). The Lakers, who have whipsawed from a slow rebuild to trying to make the most of James’ remaining championship window, have to explore every option leading up to Thursday’s trade deadline (and, if necessary, beyond). The most likely scenario would also be painful if you buy into the team’s evaluation of its youngsters: Davis for Kyle Kuzma, Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Ivica Zubac, another player or two to balance the salaries and draft picks. We know: Kuzma is a star-in-waiting. Ingram was supposed to be, and his recent stretch of play indicates either (a) he finally gets it, or (b) he’s a tease. Zubac’s play has been a revelation lately, but he’s no All-Star yet. And the jury is still out on Ball, who is currently hurt but whose play when healthy still alternates between encouraging and aggravating. As an aside, how many others out there have run various trade scenarios through ESPN’s NBA Trade Machine to see what might work for salary cap purposes? I came up with Ball, Ingram, Kuzma, Zubac, Michael Beasley and Moe Wagner for Davis, and I had to add Beasley and then Wagner for the trade to work cap-wise. Six for one plus a pick or two going to New Orleans is expensive but worth it for such a talent, although you could be looking at a bunch of 10-day contracts and South Bay Lakers call-ups to fill out the roster over the rest of this season. The alternative would be substituting Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and his $12 million salary for Beasley and Wagner, but that would require KCP’s consent (and remember, he is also a Rich Paul client). All of this hinges on the willingness of Demps and the Pelicans to cooperate. The perception right now is that he’s slow-walking the process, though that could change between now and Thursday. Consider, too, that folks in New Orleans these days have little inclination to cooperate with anybody from Los Angeles about anything, for fairly obvious reasons. Anything that could be seen as giving Davis away to the Lakers would not be received well by the hometown fans.Related Articles AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREUCLA alum Kenny Clark signs four-year contract extension with Packers Trail Blazers beat Grizzlies in play-in, earn first-round series with the Lakers The horror, players exercising their rights. (And maybe Charles momentarily forgot that such superteams are actually quite good for the NBA’s, and by extension TNT’s, business model.)Then again, Lakers fans can be pardoned for wondering if it’s also collusion when everyone else in the league endeavors to avoid trading their stars here? Meanwhile, NBA Twitter and a nation’s worth of fans have one more soap opera to ponder. How athletes protesting the national anthem has evolved over 17 years And a new wrinkle appeared Friday afternoon. Part of the Lakers’ urgency involved the idea that the Boston Celtics, prohibited from getting involved because of a collective bargaining restriction involving the above-scale rookie contracts that both Davis and Kyrie Irving have, could jump into the bidding after July 1 if Irving, as expected, opts out of his final year. Then Anthony Davis Sr. spoke up.ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reported late Friday afternoon that the father of the player, citing the August 2017 trade of Isaiah Thomas to Cleveland for Irving while Thomas was recovering from a hip injury, said: “I would never want my son to play for Boston after what they done to Isaiah Thomas. No loyalty. Guy gives his heart and soul and they traded him … This is just my opinion, not Anthony’s. I’ve just seen things over the years with Boston, and there’s no loyalty.”Anyone still wonder why the NBA is more fascinating off the court than on? Stay tuned. The Thursday deadline looms, and the drama’s just starting.jalexander@scng.com@Jim_Alexander on Twitter  Charles Barkley was on a rant Thursday night on TNT. The news that New Orleans Pelicans big man Anthony Davis had asked for a trade, the idea that Davis and LeBron James share an agent, and all of the tracks seemingly leading Davis to the Lakers … yeah, that roused Chuck’s sense of order.“We cannot have agents and players colluding to set (up) a stacked superteam,” Barkley said. “(Commissioner) Adam Silver needs to say, Anthony Davis, we love you, (but) …”His “Inside The NBA” sparring partner, Kenny Smith, interjected: “You can’t have players … ?”“We can’t have players dictating who gonna play together,” Barkley responded. “Guys are sharing agents, they’re stacking teams.” Trail Blazers, Grizzlies advance to NBA play-in game; Suns, Spurs see playoff dreams dashed Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more

Charles Barkley on LaVar Ball: ‘There’s a village missing an idiot’

first_imgLaVar Ball has been in the news lately for the wrong reasons, and Charles Barkley has apparently had enough.ESPN recently banned Ball from appearing as a guest for an inappropriate comment he made to ESPN “First Take” host Molly Qerim. Ball denied he meant anything inappropriate by suggesting to Qerim that “she could “switch gears with [him] anytime.” Celtics free agency rumors: Boston emerging as ‘stealth’ suitor for Kemba Walker Raptors president Masai Ujiri: I’m staying with Toronto Yet whatever Ball’s intent, it’s not the first time he’s stirred controversy, and it won’t be the last. Barkley, who is well known for his outspoken ways as an NBA on TNT analyst, ripped Ball in an interview with TMZ Sports.“Wherever LaVar Ball is, there’s a village missing an idiot,” Barkley told TMZ. “We should just keep LaVar off television. That would be the best way to be.” Related News When Barkley was asked whether the recent reported trade of Ball’s son, Lonzo, from the Lakers to the Pelicans, would have an impact on LaVar, Barkley jumped right in.“It don’t matter,” Barkley said. “(LaVar is) an idiot in all 50 states. Not New Orleans, not Louisiana, not L.A., he’s an idiot in all 50 states.” Lakers’ Jeanie Buss ‘surprised’ Magic Johnson resigned … but she doesn’t blame him Adopting a more sensitive tone, Barkley said he believes the elder Ball’s antics are hurting Lonzo.“It’s really unfair to his son,” Barkley said. “His son is a good player and a nice kid.”last_img read more

Les Miles addresses Pooka Williams at Big 12 Media Days, stands by one-game suspension

first_imgMiles, of course, referred to KU running back Pooka Williams — a preseason first-team media selection on the 2019 All-Big 12 team and a 1,125-yard rusher last season. He was reinstated last week after a seven-month suspension following a domestic violence charge.MORE: Major storylines for all Power 5 media daysMiles anticipated the question and addressed it in his opening comments.“I did not make this decision,” Miles said. “But I stand by it and see is as a right one.”Williams returned to the program last week. He will serve a one-game suspension this season and will sit out the Jayhawks’ opener against Indiana State.“Action was taken immediately,” Miles said. “We felt like a strong point was made, not only with Pooka but with the team, the idea that for 7 1/2 months, Pooka was going through a process and he didn’t have the opportunity to spend time with his team, go to the weight room, just be a part (of the team).“Pooka went through a legal investigation with the legal community. Pooka also went through proceedings with the conduct board with the university. Basically, understood very much that if he did not meet the criteria that the board asked, that this would not last long, and he really met every criteria that he could.”Also on Monday, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby clarified the Big 12’s policy on dealing with athletes who are accused of or commit domestic violence.“It’s not a domestic violence policy,” Bowlsby said. “It’s a ‘serious misconduct’ policy so it covers domestic violence but also a wide variety of other things.“The Kansas process followed what our misconduct policy describes, and that is that the decision is made outside of the athletics department and within university higher administration. That’s the level at which that decision was made.”MORE: Big 12 Media Days team schedules, players attendingWilliams was arrested on assault charges after an incident with his girlfriend in December. She told police Williams punched her in the stomach and grabbed her throat. The Kansas City Star has reported the woman showed police text messages from Williams admitting to punching her in the arms.A police officer found bruises on the woman, according to an affidavit. Williams claimed the bruises came from trying to lead her out of an apartment and into the hallway to talk, and then when he tried to move her out of his way as he left.“He’s taken responsibility,” Miles said. “He’s been remorseful. He’s learned from this experience, as has our team. We’re thankful to have him back. And again, no violence against a woman is OK.” ARLINGTON, Texas — New Kansas coach Les Miles got in front of the question before anyone could ask it.“There is no proper way to put it,” Miles said Monday during his time on the podium at Big 12 Media Days. “There is no violence — violence will not be accepted with women. Period.” Williams later released a statement through the university.“My behavior was unacceptable, and I’m very sorry to those who were impacted by my poor choices,” he said. “I am disappointed in myself, not just as a man, but as a student-athlete looked up to by younger kids. My suspension from football has been hard, but I have learned from it. “I’m thankful I can continue with my education at KU. Looking ahead, the most important thing to me is to regain the trust and respect of my classmates, teammates, and fans. I am humbled to return to football and to prepare for the season.”last_img read more

Spars Cup 2014 – Igokea, Šibenik and Timisoara in Sarajevo: New Great Project by Spars

first_imgWhen it comes to club basketball in Sarajevo, it looks like only the Youth basketball club Spars is going somewhere. We could see that at the yesterday’s press conference held on occasion of the forthcoming Spars Cup 2014 tournament where, besides Spars as a host, other clubs like the Bosnian champion Igokea, Šibenik from Croatia and Timisoara from Romania will play too.A growing traditionThe president of the club Nihad Selimović pointed out that the tournament will become tradition and that in time stronger teams will arrive to Skenderija. The first matches are scheduled for today, one between Timisoara and Igokea at 17:30 o’clock and the other between Spars and Šibenik at 20:00 o’clock. On Saturday, a match will be played for the 3rd place while the final match is scheduled at 18:30 o’clock.“The tournament will serve as a checkup of the actual condition of the team gathered for a month now, while the basic preparations were held during that time at Vlašić. The most important thing is that we have mostly kept the same members as in the last season and that we are going to face new challenges with more experience.” – said Selimović.The first Bosnian team’s trainer Marko Trbić points out that the club wishes to bring well known teams at the tournament so that the young players from Spars could have a chance to play against excellent players.“We made efforts to organize this tournament on our own and decided to call the teams with more experience than us. The tournament will be a chance for us to see in which direction to go in the future as well as to see our mistakes and to try to eliminate our deficiencies. We will probably have some problems when it comes to striking but we will fix that by the beginning of the season. The most important thing is that our opponents are of high quality and we will try to ensure as much matches with them as possible. When it comes to our players, we miss two of them this year, but we will rely on our experience. Ambitions remain the same and that is to play again in the finals.” – said Trbić.New captainWhen Adin Vrabac went to the German Trier, the captain of Spars became a young and senior representative of our country Stefan Glogovac who said that the role of captain represents great honour for him.“This is my fifth year in the club and I am very glad to succeed Vrabac. I am grateful to the coach and to the Management of the club for the confidence they have in me. I will do my best to fulfil their expectations. I hope I will play even better in the next season and that I will be invited again to our senior representation.” – said Glogovac.(Source: Oslobođenje / photo: Didier Torche)last_img read more
