Hearts of Oak made it through to the Round of 16 of the NC Special Tier II Competition with a hard fought 4-2 win over lower division side Uncle T Stars at the Accra Sports Stadium. Hearts Head Coach Kim Grant put out probably his strongest eleven, but they struggled to break down a very resilient Uncle T, and went behind a few minutes to the break, against the run of play. Hearts however hit back almost immediately as Joseph Esso headed home through a precise cross from Christopher Bonney, to make the score level at halftime.Hearts, after the restart, began to knock on the door in search of the lead, but a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping let them down.Bonney eventually gave Hearts the lead after 60 minutes, converting coolly from the spot, after a foul on Fatawu Mohammed in the box. The lead didn’t last long though, as Uncle T found the equalizer, just two minutes later after a mistake from Hearts goalkeeper Richmond Ayi. Hearts continued to search for the winner, and found the back of the net after 80 minutes, when Kojo Obeng Jnr headed home from Bonney corner. Substitute Kofi Kordzi finally put the game beyond doubt with a well taken finish from close range to make the score 4-2 to the Phobians. Hearts join rivals Kotoko and AshGold in the next round, with Karela and Aduana bowing out after respective first round defeats.

Twenty years of diplomatic relations between China and South Africa a major contributor to local economic and social transformation
Twenty years of diplomatic relations between China and South Africa a major contributor to local economic and social transformation. South Africa-China Economic and Trade Association (SACETA) on Thursday hosted Chinese and South African delegates for the official release of the 2018 Corporate Social Responsibility Report of Chinese-Funded Enterprises in South Africa. At the launch event, Chairman of the Association and General Manager of China Construction Bank Corporation, Zhang Jinguo shared that the report depicts the on-going cohesion between China and South Africa, which entails job creation, social responsibility, local manufacturing, and the preservation of wildlife and natural reserve protection.Publishing a report of this nature for the first time in South Africa is a massive achievement for the 130 Chinese-funded enterprises that contributes to economic development and livelihood in South African communities. The report highlights how much has been done and also sparks creativity for further bilateral trade and corporate social responsibility. “The report is a window. When you open the book, you open the window. It serves as a good model for SACETA members,” Jinguao said.Chinese Ambassador in South Africa, HE Lin Songtian, said that the 2018 Corporate Social Responsibility Report of Chinese-Funded Enterprises in South Africa is a showcase of how Chinese enterprises implement the common values of friendship and justice that exists between the two countries. China has been SA’s biggest trade partner for 9 years and bilateral trade for the first quarter of 2018 amounted to 33.2 billion USD.There are many factors that point to a mutually beneficial commitment. The Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) took place in Beijing this year, while South Africa hosted the 10th annual BRICS Summit. Furthermore, China’s top 5 financial institutions have branches in South Africa.Songtian believes that the two countries are in a season of embracing new historic opportunities, with special consideration of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s vision for South Africa to attract domestic and foreign investment. The Chinese sentiment maintains that this is indeed a win-win cooperation.Going forward, Dr Miriam Altman, Commissioner of National Planning Commission believes that the National Development Plan 2030 (NDP) relies heavily on the existing Africa-China relationship. “We need to seek more balanced trade, increase tourism prospects, and give fair attention to education and skills training, not forsaking deeper cooperation in innovation,” Altman concluded.

Deputy Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly and BJP MLA Michael Lobo said on Wednesday that the BJP-led coalition government had failed beef eaters by not making it available in the state and not keeping cow vigilantes in check.“Some so-called cow protectors are standing at the border and blocking the beef that is being brought into Goa. They say that some Gau Rakshaks have thrown phenyl on the beef. The Goa Meat Complex (State abattoir) has been shut. Some people may not like the way I am talking but if we do not want beef to come from Karnataka and Maharashtra, then certified cattle in Goa should be slaughtered at the government meat complex,” Mr. Lobo, MLA from Calangute constituency told the Goa legislative assembly. While respecting the sentiments of the “Gau Rakshaks”, Mr. Lobo said, “There are people in Goa in large numbers, the Christian and Muslim community and others who eat beef. There are tourists who come here to eat beef. You cannot stop that. But now there is a shortage of beef for our feasts,” Mr. Lobo said.Goa on an average consumes around 20-25 tons of beef every day, and in the absence of operations by State’s only mechanised abttoir in Usgao in South Goa, demand is met by importing from neighbouring states by members of local meat traders’ association.Earlier this year, beef traders in the State went on strike alleging harassment by cow vigilante groups. The strike was called off after intervention by the Chief Minister who directed the police to crack down on cow vigilantes.
The People’s Union for Democratic Rights, a Delhi-based civil liberties and democratic rights organisation, has expressed concern over “intimidation and death threats to public-spirited individuals and professionals in the Niyamgiri region by the office of the Superintendent of Police, Kalahandi”.In a statement, the PUDR said that Padmanabha Choudhury, a journalist, had been invited by the villagers to cover a meeting on Forest Rights Act at Laptaguda in Chatrapur panchayat in Lanjigarh block of the district on June 17. Policemen visited him at his house that very evening and asked him to accompany them to the Lanjigarh police station, alleging that he had attended a Maoist meeting.“Mr. Chaudhury’s motorcycle key was forcibly taken from him and the vehicle detained at the police station. He waited two days to meet the superintendent of police in his office. On June 19, the SP interrogated him and began abusing him in filthy language… He [Mr. Chaudhury] repeatedly informed him that the meeting was a discussion on FRAand that the villagers are planning to meet the district magistrate too. The SP did not heed his explanation, but threatened to beat him with a plastic cable, and threatened to have him killed in an encounter if he argued about why he attended the Maoist meeting,” the PUDR statement said.“Most shaken and tense with these threats and intimidation by the SP to go yet again to his office, the journalist reached the State Human Rights Commission in Bhubaneswar and registered a complaint stating that he is in fear of his safety and his life.”The PUDR statement, signed by its secretaries — Deepika Tandon and Shahana Bhattacharya — said that Mr. Chaudhury’s intimidation forms part of the relentless harassment, custodial violence and illegal detentions of people of Niyamgiri for resisting bauxite mining by Vedanta in their hills.“Previously, the Kalahandi police and administration have targeted British Kumar, a youth leader of the Khandualamli Suraksha Samiti and Bhumi Adhikaar Suraksha Samiti, Lingaraj Azad and Lada Sikaka, members of Niyamgiri Suraksha Samiti, on allegations of association with Maoists, while they attempt to assert their constitutional rights and bring attention to the ongoing rights violations and repression in the area,” said the PUDR statement. The organisation said that in 2013, 12 gram sabhas in the area had unanimously rejected bauxite mining by Vedanta in the Niyamgiri hills pursuant to a Supreme Court order. Instead of implementing the verdict of the Supreme Court and the decision of the gram sabhas under the FRA, the Odisha government is using targeted persecution of locals and journalists to crush opposition to the project, it added. The PUDR demanded that the Odisha government should initiate action against the SP for targeted intimidation of the journalist and local activists and end violation of democratic rights of the people of Niyamgiri and those seeking to expose the ongoing human rights violations in the area.
