JVP to submit reforms proposals to Maithri PM

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has decided to submit a set of reforms proposals to President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that the proposals have been compiled after obtaining the input of civil society and academics. The JVP leader said that his party will not allow the President and the Prime Minister to divert attention from their responsibilities. The JVP leader said that the proposals includes constitutional reforms and also proposals on strengthening the legal system in the country. He also said the proposals will include sections on strengthening the peace between all communities through a reconciliation process. He said that the new Government, after it initially took office in January, made some urgent changes but the pace in implementing several other key reforms has now slowed down. The JVP is also calling for the strengthening of mechanisms to investigate corruption and for legal action to be taken against those found guilty.Dissanayake said that the proposals have been formulated based on the promises made by President Maithripala Sirisena ahead of the January 8 Presidential election and based on the mandate the voters gave him and the new Government.“If the Government is committed to the mandate it received from the voters at the last Parliamentary election then they must immediately implement the proposals we give them,” he said. “The Government has given importance to other things now,” he said. He said that some of the proposals can be implemented immediately while there are those which may take some time.Dissanayake also claimed that the new Cabinet and State Ministers are now fighting for subjects which come under their Ministry and this has resulted in a delay to Gazette the subjects.
