Located off Broadway Market, south of London Fields in one of the poorer, but upcoming east-end areas, Ada Street accommodates six apartments above two small retail units in an area with the largest number of different languages spoken in the city with the largest population of artist per square kilometer in Europe. With creative shops, bars and clubs to reflect the Local Authority’s more relaxed approach to design aesthetics, Amin Taha Architects formed a structure asymmetrical in appearance with subtly battered and sloping walls and floor plates and a gentle scattering of window openings. More images and architects’ description after the break.Save this picture!© Charles HoseaThe building is finished in an all-encompassing monolithic black render making up all external elements of the building including, parapets, sills, and window reveals. Internally exposed block-work, concrete floors and ceilings with some gypsum partitions the apartments. Save this picture!© Charles HoseaThe client expressed an ambition for utility and unadorned domesticity. The practice’s general strategy is to find a binding aesthetic form with a reduced material palette. The detail illustrates the extension of this logic through the use of fewer, yet standard products to reduce construction junction types, associated specialist trades, their time on site and associated costs. Save this picture!© Charles HoseaExternally, the Dryvit insulated render system, certified to 24 degrees from the horizontal, is used to perform a number of roles, avoiding the need for copings, sills, external gutters and drains. First it was used to weather external walls and the upper pitched roof, and around window openings to form reveals, returning to an integral sloping sill. At roof level the system alone forms the parapet and coping, terminating against the roof coverings. Finally, the integral DPC at the base avoids an overlap of trades when sealing the building. Together with Velfac’s glazing and Guaranteed Asphalt’s inverted flat roof, the external envelope is reduced to three products and trades, contributing to the coherence of the form. Save this picture!© Charles HoseaThis reduction is followed through internally, where precast concrete planks are left as exposed soffits, and floors are power-floated concrete. This standard floor build-up was engineered to meet acoustic performance requirements without the need for suspended plasterboard ceilings or raised floors. The resultant savings permit the use of underfloor heating and 5 amp lighting circuits throughout, allowing better room layout flexibility, without radiators or pendants determining furniture arrangements.Save this picture!© Charles HoseaProject gallerySee allShow lessNantong Sports Center Winning Proposal / HennArticlesGlass Farm / MVRDVArticlesProject locationAddress:London, EnglandLocation to be used only as a reference. The ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces organized a forum on the Egyptian media

first_img Organisation The ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces organized a forum on the Egyptian media to which the main political groupings and leading media figures were reportedly invited although a list of guests was not released. The Council said civil society organisations could submit their demands by fax. Reporters Without Borders voiced concern that the armed forces would use the forum to dodge criticism of recent abuses for which it was responsible. It called on the council to listen to the demands for media freedom and to show new respect for the work of journalists. How a digital marketing agency creates financial buyer personas

first_img 42SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr First of all… what IS a Buyer Persona and why would your credit union or your digital marketing agency care about these anyway?Well, according to HubSpot “a buyer persona is a semi-fictional representation of your ideal customer based on market research and real data about your existing customers.”And WHY does a credit union or community bank NEED to create these?Well, as with most things in marketing or sales, if you can relate on an individual level to a concept, it makes it much easier to design content or other marketing or sales communications that will resonnate with your audience. In a nutshell… if you really know WHO someone is, then you will be able to better deliver what they are looking for. This just makes logical sense. When creating a buying persona for a credit union or bank client, we like to start slowly, focusing on 2-3 targets first. Afterall, you have to walk before you can run. continue reading »last_img read more

NEWS SCAN: Multistate E coli outbreak, H9 flu case in Hong Kong, WHO pandemic guidance

first_imgNov 3, 2009E coli outbreak with 2 deaths linked to ground beefAn outbreak of 28 Escherichia coli cases in 16 states, with two deaths, has been linked to ground beef from a firm in New York, according to federal officials. The US Department of Agriculture reported Oct 31 that Fairbank Farms of Asheville, N.Y., was recalling 545,699 pounds of ground beef potentially contaminated with E coli. Yesterday the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said isolates from seven patients genetically matched an isolate from an opened package of the firm’s ground beef from a Massachusetts patient’s home. Most of the patients fell ill between Sep 17 and Oct 10, the CDC reported. Sixteen were hospitalized, 3 suffered hemolytic uremic syndrome, a form of kidney failure, and 2 died, the agency said. States affected by the outbreak are California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and Vermont. Most of the recalled products list “Est. 492” on the USDA mark of inspection and carry the date “091509” or “091609.”Oct 31 USDA recall noticeNov 2 CDC statementChinese woman treated for H9 avian flu in Hong KongA woman from Guangdong province on the Chinese mainland is being treated in Hong Kong for a rare case of H9 avian influenza, Hong Kong government officials reported today. The woman fell ill with breathlessness and a cough Oct 26 and was admitted to a Hong Kong hospital 2 days later, the statement said. The woman, who has a preexisting medical condition that requires regular medication, is in stable condition in isolation. Five previous H9 infections have been identified in Hong, all involving children, in 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2008, officials said. They gave no information about the source of the infection.WHO issues pandemic guidance for non-health sectorThe World Health Organization (WHO) has released a set of guidelines—developed before the H1N1 influenza pandemic—on pandemic preparedness outside the health sector. The 18-page document includes sections on business continuity management, interdependencies among essential services, government’s role, and the role of other organizations. A foreword cautions that, because the guidance was developed before the H1N1 pandemic, some information and recommendations may not be relevant to the current situation.WHO document “Whole-of-Society Pandemic Readiness”last_img read more
