Nova Scotia Schools Businesses Go IdleFree

first_imgMore than 20 schools and businesses across Nova Scotia are encouraging drivers to save fuel and help protect the environment with idle-free signs. The idle-free signs are available through Conserve Nova Scotia’s DriveWiser program and are free for Nova Scotia businesses and institutions to install. The signs are a reminder to drivers to turn off engines to avoid unnecessary idling. “Nova Scotia drivers can get more out of a tank of gas by making a few simple changes like reducing their idling time,” said Barry Barnet, Minister responsible for Conserve Nova Scotia, today, Jan. 20, at Charles P. Allen High School in Bedford. “Reducing idling can also cut carbon emissions in our province. If every driver in Nova Scotia avoided idling for five minutes a day, it would be like removing more than 14,000 cars from the roads for a year.” “If you’re parked outside our school, turn off your engine to keep our air clean and save some fuel,” said Mary Hodgett, a Grade 12 student at C.P. Allen and member of the school’s environment club. “Over the next few months, our environment club will be approaching local businesses and encouraging them to help make our community cleaner by installing idle-free signs at work.” Other participating schools and businesses include: Membertou School, Saint Mary’s Academy, Saint Mary’s Education Centre, Lockeport Regional High School, Nova Scotia Agricultural College, Nova Scotia Community College, Commercial Safety College, Dalhousie University, Mount Saint Vincent University, Saint Mary’s University, Market Stall, PeopleWorx, Soundafex, Rainbow Preschool Daycare, Marikens Trading Post, Brookside Gardens, Lawtons, Atlantic Superstore, SaveEasy, Credit Union Atlantic, and Colchester Regional Hospital. DriveWiser is a behavioural-change program, funded by Conserve Nova Scotia and delivered by Clean Nova Scotia. DriveWiser encourages Nova Scotia drivers to buy, maintain and drive for fuel efficiency. Part of Conserve Nova Scotia’s mandate includes encouraging energy efficiency in the transportation sector.
