(Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)Ohio State football looks pretty great tonight, with Dwayne Haskins and company carving up Washington to the tune of a 28-3 lead midway through the third quarter of Urban Meyer’s final game. The Buckeyes look like a completely different football team than the one that struggled en route to a blowout loss to Purdue early in the year.Of course, this is college football, and every week absolutely matters. We’ve seen teams on the wrong side of the College Football Playoff due to one blowout loss before. Ohio State knows is better than anybody.Last year, the Buckeyes were absolutely drubbed by Iowa on the road. This year, it was that Purdue game. The talk of this Ohio State game right now is that the Buckeyes look like a College Football Playoff level team. The selection committee can only go with what is on the resumes, and that Purdue loss obviously put them behind undefeated Notre Dame. Oklahoma avenged its only loss, vs. Texas, in the Big 12 Championship, making them an easy pick ahead of the Buckeyes as well.Still, based on this, it is natural to think they would have been a better test for Clemson than the Fighting Irish, at the very least.Ohio State is the team with most legit playoff beef.— Ralph D. Russo (@ralphDrussoAP) January 2, 2019Ohio State was good enough to be in the playoff this year and then some. How that Purdue game went down may be the biggest mystery in my time covering college sports.— Dan Wolken (@DanWolken) January 2, 2019This @rosebowlgame reminds me of the @OrangeBowl games of the early ‘90s, when Nebraska would win the Big Eight & go get embarrassed by Miami or Florida St. Big difference between @OhioStateFB and @UW_Football. Confirms @pac12 has work to do.— Ivan Maisel (@Ivan_Maisel) January 2, 2019Ohio State has become the reincarnation of Pete Carroll’s later USC teams that slipped out of national title picture early but always drilled someone in the Rose Bowl.— Stewart Mandel (@slmandel) January 2, 2019If anything, this is a good argument to Playoff expansion. With a six-team field, you’d still have extremely competitive Ohio State and Georgia teams crashing the party, and it might weed out a squad like Notre Dame earlier than the semifinal, while still giving it the shot to prove itself.last_img read more
